Working With PTSD: Tools for Transforming Trauma
Presentation: Oct. 20th 10 AM - Noon
George Mason University, Sub II
Fairfax, VA 22030
Clinicians are often stymied by the persistent affect regulation difficulties facing clients who have been chronically traumatized. This workshop will provide participants with a variety of skills emerging from the bottom-up therapies like somatic experiencing and sensorimotor psychotherapy. Through lecture, case presentation, experiential exercises and videotape, this workshop will teach participants how to stage and pace their work with trauma patients and introduce how clinicians might successfully integrate strategies from DBT, EMDR, Ego State Therapy, imagery, ritual as well as the newer somatically based approaches.
Emerging from the integration of developmental, neurological and social perspectives, this workshop will equip clinicians with a tool kit for assisting patients who rely on dissociative, maladaptive and reactive responses for managing intense emotions. How these skills might be used with veterans returning from Iraq will also be discussed.
